There is massive headroom on the input stage and the compression is really nice. First, the attack and release times are increased, so you have options for faster times. These are beautiful sounding units with a lot of dynamic range and big bottom end. Again, these are minor and would not stop me from buying this unit. But the sound of the compressor was extremely engaging -just not the same as the original's.
Solder the input tranny in + to pin 2 of the xlr jack. The power switch is on the front face rather than on the back of the unit, which I appreciate. New Item: We have this on order, the manufacturer hasn't shipped but you'll be in line upon arrival. This review was originally published on Model purchased in Switzerland. But I wondered what it might sound like with better components. Ive heard of some companies doing so and i want to do it myself.
It is great in the studio and even better in a live situation which really surprised me that it would perform that well live. I first learned about the Revive mods when I was looking at some high-end, and rather pricey, optical compressors. What we end up with is a Boutique sounding Tube Opto compressor that excels! Definately pleasing to the eye. These units have been professionally modified by our technicians and given the seal of approval to go to work at you home or in your studio. It didnt do anything for the compression aspects but it did make the overall sound better.
I like doing things myself so i was hoping someone had done this to offer up a parts list with part numbers. The process of communicating with them, shipping the gear to them, and getting it back was very professional, and the turnaround was fairly quick — just a few weeks for all three pieces. It was really hi-fi but also added a lot of character to the drums. The attack and release controls were useful, but it was difficult to keep the newer version from overcompressing. In fact I wouldn't hesitate to use it on just about anything if it was the only outboard compressor that I had in my rig. Quite easy with a Weller electro-desoldering pump.
I was pleasantly surprised that it sounded so good right out of the box. I seem to remember it was a pretty expensive mod. Most people arent using hardware compressers anymore but I am still all for them and they are worth the buy. But who really cares if it sounds great! I tried a great deal of these out and this one by far has the best all around sound for the money. Please let me know if I can send these units to you and what the costs might be. When he says it's good. The Vactrol is changed and the Tube plate voltage is increased to an acceptable level for the circuit.
For really heavy hitting instrumentation it is a bit colored like kick drums. Since I believe that the circuitry is the same, this means that the original wasn't taking full advantage of how fast the opto could operate. The best improvement is how it processes stereo program material. These are beautiful sounding units with a lot of dynamic range and big bottom end. It has a very thick and warm sound on account of the tubes, and this sound is suitable to apply to a good amount of differing applications.
First you have the design of the audio circuit. All the knobs are now click-stop, and the layout is even more intuitive. Hey, is this a rare time when hardware is mimicking a feature found on plug-ins? The body is full metal and the knobs are metal as well. Chris Simply insert the spacers under the transformer's mounting flanges. We've been pretty busy, so I haven't had a chance to really put my ears on them.
They have a huge list of gear they have developed mods for, so I strongly suggest you check out their website, because you probably already have some of the gear they work on. There are differences in the sidechain circuit although I have not taken the time to trace out the differences. Stock Item: Ships from our shelf quickly in almost all cases when ordered before our ship cutoff times. Put this on a drum submix and crank the attack and release to full fast. Purveyors of tube rolling can alter the output character somewhat, but will not change the actual compression characteristics with tubes. Next, Panasonic capacitors are added in coupling and de-coupling functions that results in better frequency response, lower noise, and will help the unit last longer. Anyone got any first hand experience with using better tubes, and what was the result.
