It is possible to retrofit the older 4l80s to a manual lockup, but it's easier on the earlier than mine models. Like anything else the steel valves stroking in an aluminum bore tend to wear the bore to the point that you begin to have leakage around the spools and thus you end up with misdirected and lowered fluid supplies and pressures to the components. Someone who just tows heavy who doesnt need a full stage 5 but needs more than a stage 1 can get a stage 3. What we really need is a power reverser between the trans and T-case.
Additional cost applies for a quality inspected used drum. That would explain why the material in the band is down to metal and the drum surface is showing a lot of wear. There are over 20 different variations of the 4L80E so we have over 20 different part numbers! That part of the thinking is done for me and no problems with comparability. Can be ordered with a 2. The 3rd tranny worked but died one year later. The remainder of the truck is immediately removed from the property and sent to the local crusher. Of course reverse works too, and 3-4 is smooth as silk. My understanding, and how it's been described to me by transmission experts, suggests that 3rd or 4th can be used either in lockup or out, hence my statement.
